Support Meissner – snow is coming!

Dear Meissner supporters and fellow Nordies,

With a week or more of summer-like weather to start October, it is hard to believe that the upcoming ski season is only six to seven weeks away. The Meissner Nordic Board is already hard at work getting ready for the first snow fall.

On your first trip to the Meissner Sno Park this winter you will notice one big change. Three years ago the Forest Service, in partnership with the Meissner Board, submitted an RTP grant in Salem for funds for a permanent building at the Virginia Meissner Sno-Park trailhead. The funds were finally awarded and construction began in early August, with completion scheduled for mid-November. When the new shelter is completed, we plan to install a wood stove. You will now have a warmer and drier place to change your boots and clothes prior to and after skiing. We hope you enjoy this added amenity.

As you are well aware of, trail grooming and maintenance throughout the ski season at Virginia Meissner Sno-park is completely supported by individual and corporate donations (remember, no monies from the annual sno-park pass needed to park at Meissner Sno-Park goes toward grooming). With this in mind, we are encouraging all Nordic skiers who enjoy skiing at Meissner Sno-Park to prepare for the upcoming season by renewing their support/membership of Meissner Nordic this fall. There are several different support level options available, or you can write in a dollar amount of your choosing if you like. If you were not a supporter last year we hope you will join us this year. If you have friends who enjoy skiing at Meissner Sno-Park but have not been a Meissner supporter in the past, share this letter with them and encourage them to sign up! Early sign-ups help the Board with budgeting and general planning. You can sign up using our website at or we have scheduled four in-person sign up events at Sunnyside Sports and WebSkis (sign up locations, dates and times will be posted on our website and our Facebook page in the coming weeks).

Also, we are in the process is of scheduling several work parties for some trail maintenance and stocking the Meissner and Shooting Star shelters, along with the new building, with fire wood. Watch for a future announcement detailing dates and times.

Finally, we are looking for a few new Board members. The Meissner Nordic board of directors is down to five volunteers and we would like to have seven. We will also need replacements at the end of this season for two board members whose terms have already exceeded three years. Please consider donating some of your time to help maintain the momentum we have created in making the Virginia Meissner Sno Park the go to place for community-based skiing. If you are inclined to learn more about being a Board member, feel free to contact any of the current Board members directly or schedule a time with me to come to the next Board meeting on November 4th at the Simpson Avenue fire station.

In the meantime, let’s enjoy the rest of “summer” while we start doing our snow dance!
See you on the trails,

Michael Coe
Meissner Nordic Board President
